April 30, 2021 deadline for payment of 2020 individual income tax owed

Last year, the federal government provided a deferral of the payment deadline for individual income taxes owed. No such deferral is allowed for this year, meaning that any balance of individual income taxes owed for the 2020 tax year must be paid on or before Friday April 30, 2021. Details of tax filing and payment deadlines for this year can be found on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website at https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/important-dates-individuals.html.

The general rule is that interest is levied on any late or insufficient payments of such tax, beginning on May 1, 2021. The federal government has, however, indicated that some relief will be provided to individuals who received pandemic-related income support benefits during 2020 and who are unable to pay their taxes in full by April 30. That relief measure, which is outlined on the CRA website at https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/news/2021/02/government-of-canada-announces-targeted-interest-relief-on-2020-income-tax-debt-for-low--and-middle-income-canadians.html, indicates that such individuals will not be required to pay interest on outstanding tax debts for the 2020 tax year until April 30, 2022.
